Superbowl commercials

After watching and talking about the superbowl in class I realize just how important it is for companies to utilize their resources through the superbowl commercials. Whether a company is trying to promote a new product or gain recognition for an old product, having so many viewers at once is worth the $3.3 million it costs for the commercial spot. That money will be made up in no time throughout the year, especially if it is a bigger company like Anheuser-Busch or Coca Cola.
On the other hand, if you think about how much money companies spend on one 30 second slot makes you wonder how has it come to this. When the superbowl first started, no one watched the superbowl for the commercials; they watched it for the sake of football. Now people that don't even like football watch the superbowl every year only for commercials even though when they watch regular television, all they want to do is get away from the commercials. The question I think about is, what caused this to happen and when did this change occur?

  1. I would venture many reasons this occurred, though two quick ones come to mind. First, in the mid-1990s, the games were largely blowouts, so the ads were more entertaining than the games. Second, ad agencies have really looked at these ads as events. That started with Apple's "1984" ad, but have really grown in importance in the last 10-12 years.
